Maternity DNA testing will confirm the biological mother of a child. The most common use for a maternity test is for legal purposes. For example, to prove a maternal relationship to a child for UK residency.
We analyse a number of genetic ‘locations’ in each person’s DNA profile. Each person possesses two (of many possible) alleles at each genetic location. We identify the alleles using numbers. These ‘numbers’ come from the parents at conception. One comes from the mother and one from the father. In turn, we can create a list of numbers for each person taking part in the test.
In the maternity DNA test, we compare the DNA profiles of the putative mother and child. From this, one of the child’s numbers should match up with a number from the mother’s sample. If this is the case, we will include the person as the biological mother of the child If the numbers match at all locations. This proves they have passed these genetic markers to the child at conception.
In turn, locations where there is no match will exclude a person as the biological mother. This is because it is only possible to pass on to your children the alleles which you have in your own DNA.
The average analysis time in the laboratory for a maternity test is around three working days. But this does not include the quality checks needed for sample integrity or your consent paperwork. So, from receipt of your samples at Crystal Health Group, it takes on average of about three to four working days. If there are any unforeseen delays, for example, such as the paperwork we receive not being quite right, we will contact you as soon as possible to let you know.
Here are the options available to you:
* Please note, you can only use self-collection kits for peace of mind purposes only. This test cannot be used for legal purposes.
Maternity DNA testing does not work the same as paternity DNA testing. We will only test the mother and child. As a result, the statistical output will provide either a positive (inclusion) or negative (exclusion) result. Also, if the mother is not available, you could consider sibling DNA testing or grandparent DNA testing as a way of establishing maternity. Please call and speak to a Clinical Advisor to discuss your options.
For your convenience, we have a network of DNA Clinics throughout the UK. As a result, we can provide maternity DNA test appointments for you in your local area. Alternatively, we can arrange for a certified sample collection officer to visit your home or other convenient location of your choice.
