A simple guide to complex DNA relationship testing

At Crystal Health Group, we offer a range of ‘Complex DNA tests’ to suit your circumstances. Our helpful clinical team will provide advice and guidance on your best testing option based on the answers you are looking for, and the individuals available for testing.

Complex dna relationship testing

What is Complex DNA Relationship Testing?

We use complex DNA testing in situations where the biological parent is unavailable for testing. Therefore, it is an indirect way of testing a paternal or maternal relationship by using different relatives. For example, we can conduct an avuncular test using a DNA sample from the brother or sister of the potential father, if he is not available. Alternatively, we could conduct a sibling test using a known child of the potential father. We currently offer the following complex DNA relationship tests:

  • Sibling testing
  • Grandparent testing
  • Avuncular (Aunt / Uncle) testing
  • Y Chromosome testing (to verify direct paternal ancestry)

Why do some complex DNA tests produce an inconclusive result?

An inconclusive result means we do not have enough DNA evidence to report a test result. When conducting complex tests, the results are based on statistics, and the probability or likelihood that 2 individuals will share a certain amount of similar DNA, which differs depending on the relationship. This is unlike a paternity test where an individual will inherit half of their DNA from their mother and half from their father.

In addition, if the DNA of the individuals being tested is common within the general population, this can also impact the evidence required to provide a conclusive test result. Also, we occasionally detect mutations in a person’s DNA, which although not harmful means the DNA is slightly altered and therefore does not match the relatives DNA exactly.

DNA Testing Laboratory

How do we avoid Inconclusive results?

While other companies analyse just 23 locations on the DNA molecule, we standardly test 43 different loci for all complex DNA tests to ensure the most reliable and accurate results. In addition, including a known parent can also reduce the risk of obtaining an inconclusive result. Again, while other DNA testing companies will charge you for this, we offer this option at no additional cost.

However, on the rare occasion where we still obtain an inconclusive result, we can now offer further analysis to compare an additional 10 loci. If required, this additional service will be suggested and discussed with you. An additional fee will apply in this case to cover the cost of additional lab analysis, the scientists time, and the extra administration and support required. This service takes a considerable amount of time and further resources outside of our standard testing process.

Additionally, it may be possible to test an alternate relationship depending on the family members who are available for testing. Our knowledgeable clinical team will discuss which options are best for your circumstances.

How can Crystal health Group support you throughout your testing journey?

We understand that this can be a worrying time and we therefore allocate a designated Case Manager to your test. Your Case Manager will support you throughout and answer any questions you may have. Unlike many companies, we have a continuously manned telephone line where we can speak to you directly and discuss your options and any concerns you may have.

Finally, we have a partnership with a leading research laboratory who can assist with more complicated cases should this be required. Call 0800 988 7107 to discuss your needs.
